Wholesaling

I get asked a lot of questions about wholesaling: the pros and cons, the why’s, where’s, and how-to’s, etc. I used to wholesale, so I’m hoping that what I learned from doing so will benefit others who have the desire to do the same. If you’re just in the planning stages at this point, then you’ll want to gather as much information as possible that will help you to begin. The most basic questions I hear regarding starting to wholesale include the following.

Should I have minimums, and if so, what should they be?
How should I set my prices?
What kind of “Tax ID” will my customers need to provide?
How do I know my customer’s ID/documentation is valid?

Minimums
Most wholesalers have minimum order requirements; some require product minimums, some total order amount minimums, and many require both. I required both types of minimums. I kept my total order minimum low ($50), so that I made my products attainable to small business owners like myself, who could not usually afford high minimums. But I required the product minimums to help deter folks from buying my products for personal use, rather than for resale. And also, since many of my homemade products are scented, it was a real pain to have to make a room spray in 10 different scents, for example, than to just make 4 in one scent. It was just far easier to manage with product minimums. So my product minimums ranged from 2-6 of a given item; it really just depended on what the product was and how difficult it was to make. And as a side note, when I set my pricing for my products, the price reflected my product minimum (i.e. if I had a minimum of 4 room sprays, then the price of that product was the cost of a total of 4 room sprays). That way, there was no worry about having someone order just one room spray–they were always ordering 4, to meet the minimum.

Some wholesalers do not require minimums, and that is always your choice, of course. But my goal was always to ensure, as much as was possible, that my products were being purchased for resale, rather than for personal use. And minimums help to deter those who would purchase products unethically at wholesale prices for their own use or consumption, which was very important to me.

Pricing
Figuring out how to price your products for wholesale can be tricky at times. But you can simplify it a lot if you keep the goal in mind: to cover the costs of your materials and to make a profit.

Many wholesalers use the Keystone Pricing method. That is, half the price of retail. So if you are selling a product for a retail price of $10, you would charge $5 for wholesale. I’m sure you’ve encountered this pricing method on many websites from which you purchase products or supplies wholesale yourself. But keystoning isn’t always the best choice, and when it’s not, that’s when you just need to get creative. Many wholesalers will simply use a percentage off–it might be 30% off retail, 40% etc. But there are no hard and fast rules on pricing. You really need to do whatever is best for you, as you keep in mind that goal: cover the costs AND make a profit.

Customer Tax ID’s
In most states, though not all, in order to purchase goods wholesale, a person must have one of the following forms of documentation to legally qualify to do so. Keep in mind, some states do not require any license or documentation at all, so it’s best to verify this if a potential customer tells you they don’t need a “Tax ID.” There’s a link here on OBJ on the Small Business Resources page; it is to the Small Business Administration and it lists all the links for each state’s Tax or Revenue Department. That’s a good resource for following up on each state’s tax requirements.

Additionally, the license or documentation needed may vary from state to state, and they may be called something completely different from state to state as well. So the list I’m including here may not be all inclusive.

Validating ID’s—to Keep Your Customer’s Honest

When I was wholesaling, it was very important to me to keep my customers as honest as possible. Most of them were anyway, but sometimes it was “iffy” at best. I wanted to be sure that if I was busting my rear to make each and every product that I was wholesaling–and sacrificing retail profits in order to do so–that my customers had the legal right to purchase my products at wholesale prices. So to that end, I required that every customer who requested access to my wholesale pricing to first provide me with a photocopy of their Tax ID (in whatever form their state required). They had to either Fax it to me, snail mail, or email it so that I would have a hard copy on file of their documentation. And then I could verify a number of items:

Customer’s name and address (If they don’t match, don’t approve until you know why–most licenses are only valid for a single address);
Expiration date of the documentation, if applicable (don’t accept it if it’s expired);
State of Origin–so I could verify a state’s requirements, if needed.
Many states have websites that will allow you to search for valid Vendor’s Licenses, Tax ID’s, etc online. I wish they all did! So when in doubt, it doesn’t hurt to check with any state you have questions about.

Some other things to keep in mind as you get ready to wholesale…

It’s important to be aware that while an FEIN is a legitimate form of documentation, a business is generally only required to have one if they have employees (though there are exceptions to this). I often see sites requesting a copy of potential customers’ FEIN, and that’s just not always appropriate, because not everyone needs to have one.

It is quite common for a husband or wife to attempt to use their spouse’s Tax ID to purchase goods wholesale. They may do this for the purpose of resale, or to purchase goods for personal use. Either way, it’s unethical at the very least, and in many cases, it’s also illegal.

In many states, a Vendor’s License (or its reasonable alternative) can only be used to purchase wholesale products that match the genre of the seller’s business. Meaning, if you sell bath and body products, and a customer has a plumbing business and wants to use their Vendor’s License to purchase your products, they are not legally allowed to do so.

It is to your benefit to maintain copies of all your wholesale customers’ Tax ID’s for accounting/tax purposes. If you were to be audited, you may be required to provide proof that you were indeed selling your wholesale products to those who were legally allowed to do so.

I hope this information will serve at least as a good starting point for those of you interested in wholesaling. I am by no means an expert on this topic. But I am sharing my experience and knowledge with you, in hopes that it may be of some use and help.

The best thing I can say is above all enjoy your children at whatever stage they are as tomorrow it will change. As Kenny Chesney's song states, "Don't Blink". As for businesss, I have learned from my search to find my own missing link that in order to be successful there are five elements that must be in place in any company I choose to participate with, they are: 1) The leaders of the company must have proven experience and integrity 2) The timing of the company. Is it a start up company? 98% of all start up companies fail within the first two years, so they must be past that stage for me to consider them. 3) Compensation plan, be certain you are clear on how many people you will need to reach your desired monthly income. ie the majority of companies you have to have 1,000-3,000 people in your organization to create a $10,000/mo residual income. In my company I receive that same $10,000/mo residual income with only 350 people brough in collectively as our company's business model is based on the power of one. 4) The company must have a good product. 5) There must be a proven, duplicatable system in place.
Other than that surround yourself with positive people and influences. Strive to stay in the eight positive emotions 100% of the time and stay away from the negative ones. The emotions are:

Actually, I promote enhancing communication, at the personal and/or professional level. And anyone with Internet access can send an inexpensive salutation and brighten someone's day! He would much rather tell people of the great nurse I am and the joy I had in my previous experiences. But he has yet to grasp that the simple act of sending a greeting card (as he has witnessed with mine) can brighten a persons day, beyond any therapy or any medication. It is with a happy heart that I announce that Project True Beauty is receiving sponsorship. Today we are joining forces with Beth El Shelter in Milford, CT and a local church.

Case workers at Beth El Shelter will be referring women to Beautiful Diva as part of Project True Beauty.

The First Baptist Church is donating the use of a building to allow us to expand our production and our project.

Women who join us as part of Project True Beauty will work and develop basic skills required to obtain entry level employment.

We are not providing full-time employment, we are providing transitional employment and immediate income for these women.

Our project has attracted the support of local individuals and organizations.

How to Stay Focused on Your Home Business Goals

When you are the owner of a home business, you will find

hundreds of distractions that vie for your time, energy and

focus.

Common distractions include: children, family, friends,

neighbors, pets, phone calls, mail, household chores, video

games, television, neighborhood children, visitors, and so many

more.

As an owner of a home based business, you must always remember

your purpose in bringing your profession home. What was your

reason for wanting to own a home business? Was your goal to work

from home so that you can share in the lives of your children?

Was your goal to be out from under the rule of a tyrannical

boss? Was your goal to have the freedom to work when it is

convenient for you? Was your goal to make tons of money working

for yourself?

Here`s a few good tips that will help you stay focused on your

home business:

TIP #1:

Whatever your reason for going out on your own, you must keep

your reason in the forefront of your mind. If you forget your

reason for starting your own home business, you will not be

working for yourself for long. It is far too easy to let

circumstance drive your activities --- and when circumstance is

in the driver`s seat, you are more likely to crash and burn.

TIP #2:

Remember --- your own business is a lot like a real job. Some

people go to work to play, some go to socialize, and others ---

most often those who are paid in a commission or tip environment

--- go to work to work and to make money. When you work for

yourself, your salary is directly proportional to your

productivity. Therefore, wouldn`t it make sense to stay focused

on getting as much done in as short of a period as possible?

Go to work to work and to make money. Leave playtime and

recreation for when your workday has ended.

TIP #3:

When you are dealing with family in the course of your workday,

it is important to schedule your activities as much as possible.

With small children, you must take time when you must, but you

should also work hard to make sure you dedicate a specific

number of hours to your workday.

With older children, it is much easier to tell them that you

will be working between the hours of x and y. Your children and

your friends must understand that certain hours of your day are

devoted to the activities of your business.

TIP #4:

Don`t permit your friends and extended family to run over you.

Many people get the blind idea that if one works from home then

they are not actually working.

Well-meaning people may try to fill your doorway to bring advice

about getting a real job. Others may simply believe that if you

are at home, then you are fair game for chitchat and

socialization.

You must stand firm. You must make certain your friends and

family understands that when you are working, then you ARE

working! If they wish to socialize with you, then they need to

do it during the hours that are not dedicated to your home

business.

You are the only one who can stand up for you. Your friends and

family will seldom be able to appreciate your dedication to your

home business, unless you make the effort to make sure that they

have the same respect for your business that you do.

TIP #5:

You should allot a certain portion of your day to email and to

regular mail. For example, allot one hour in the morning and one

hour in the afternoon to handling your written communications.

Unless you dedicate certain times to the handling of these

communications, you will soon find yourself on the downward

slope of decreased productivity.

TIP #6:

When you find yourself spending too much time doing

non-productive activities, then you should seriously consider

finding a third-party service provider who will assist you in

those non-profitable business activities.

As an example, you might be in the mail-order business. You

might believe that your time is best spent writing ad copy and

setting up your advertising, but you find yourself spending far

too much time taking care of your books to take care of your

advertising in the manner that you should. In this event, it

might make more sense to hire a bookkeeper to handle your

financial records for you.

CONCLUSION:

In the end, the success of your home business is entirely and

completely reliant upon you and the decisions that you make.

You had your reasons for deciding to start your own home based

business. You must always keep your reasons in the forefront of

your mind. You must always be able to rely upon your own self

and your dedication to the success of your business.

Your friends and family might be annoyed that they cannot come

visit upon their own whim, but when success comes to you and

your business, they will better appreciate you for putting your

foot down when necessary.

Success is within your reach, if only you can stay focused on

your goals. You must decide to reach for your goals, and then,

you must have the discipline necessary to reach them.

After months of formulating and testing to get our recipe just right, I am proud to introduce our new glossy lip balm line: Addiction.

Addiction got it's name because I consistently heard from our testers that this product was addicting One of the reasons it took me so long to get these on the site is because I couldn't make enough. Every time I'd make a batch (or 5!), I'd end up selling it all locally.

Addiction is a soft balm and is almost too soft for the chapstick-like container we use (I actually think it's the perfect consistency and I love not getting my fingers messy). We also offer it in clear jars (the same ones we use for our large samples).

This is not your typical lip balm and is really more like a thicker lip gloss (if that makes any sense). For this reason, men don't like it for daytime use, but if they put it on before bed, they will wake up with the softest lips EVER! :)

Each letter contains a letter from the Easter Bunny (which also includes the meaning of Easter) and an Easter Bunnies Welcomed Here sign.

Easter is April 12th this year. Please order early to make sure you have yours sent out in time. Letters will begin to mail out on March 12th and the last day to order them will be April 3rd to ensure they arrive in plenty of time before Easter.
